Character Information
Name: Yusuke Kitagawa - Thief name: Fox
Canon: Persona 5 Royal
Canon Point: Shortly after 8/29 (After the beach day)
Age: 16 at his current canon point
(canon) background: Here
abilities:
Persona - Yusuke can summon his persona whenever he’s wearing his kitsune mask. Pulling it off summons Goemon. This persona gives him several spells, physical attacks, and buffs.
Goemon’s Abilities Currently:
- Bufula ~ Medium grade ice damage and a chance to inflict freeze to one enemy
- Mabufu ~ Light grade ice damage and a chance to inflict freeze on multiple enemies
- Tempest Slash ~ Miniscule physical damage to one enemy 3-5 times
- Dormin Rush ~ Medium physical damage to all enemies with a chance of putting them to sleep
- Rising Slash ~ Heavy physical damage to one enemy, hits harder if following up another person’s attack
- Counter ~ A chance to reflect physical attacks
- Speed Master ~ Automatically starts a fight with Sukukaja (increased agility)
Goemon’s partnership also gives Yusuke combative abilities of a greater skill with a katana and assault rifles than someone of his experience would have. The kitsune mask and outfit are tied directly to Goemon, and appear when needed.
Skill Cards - As long as he has art supplies and a blank card and a reference, he can create skill cards for various skills/abilities. If he hasn’t created one before, he needs a reference. If he has created one before, he can do so again from memory. - We can leave this aside if it’s considered game-breaky/too much! It’s just neat so I’m noting it.
Artistic/Creative: Yusuke’s entire life has revolved around creating art, it’s where his true passion lies... He’s exceptionally talented and creative, and will probably display these skills around Aterat as he tries to create new masterpieces and continue to improve his art. He has been known to experiment with several styles, from more detailed and refined to abstract.
Personality:
Yusuke is a very passionate and driven individual. Once he feels strongly about something, he can get quite vocal and dedicate himself to it entirely. This is reflected both in his dedication to art and to the cause of the phantom thieves.
With the phantom thieves, he’s driven like everyone else to put an end to the wrongdoings of people. The idea that there may be others out there like him who are in denial of the way someone is treating or exploiting them, the idea that there may be others who use their positions of power to hurt and ruin lives will not stand for the young man once his eyes have been opened. He refuses to look away or turn a blind eye again.
The amount of gusto that he approaches and art project with is quite impressive, tending to feel very strongly about the subject and in seeking out references. He isn’t shy about asking for assistance, often requesting their leader’s help in either being the reference, or assisting him with finding one. That said, Yusuke can sometimes get a little too carried away in his passion and misses the mark either due to inexperience or a lack of insight that needs to be corrected, often by someone else. Criticism can strike a rather hard blow, and he tends towards dramatic responses and becoming rather despondent quickly. Questioning the person quickly, if not severely, or falling to his knees in despair as he wonders if he’ll ever be able to capture the emotions and themes that he so desperately wants to understand and display in his art. He wants, more than anything, to be on par with the painter of the Sayuri. Though his mood and confidence can bounce back rather quickly, especially with the right words to snap him out of it. Once he does, he's right back into trying to improve and tackle a project or problem with the same passion and excitement as when he started.
Yusuke tends to approach things with an outside the box thinking and often displays an above average amount of logic and intelligence when approaching a subject with the other thieves. For someone with very little life experience, he still often presents outlooks and suggestions that can be helpful to their cause that the others don’t consider outright. In his art, he’s very creative and excitable when it comes to capturing a theme or idea. His talent has been praised in the past, even if it wasn’t under his own name. Ann goes so far as to compliment and describe the emotions that she senses in one of his pieces, unknown to her at the time that it was his own. Unfortunately, Yusuke’s social skills are very clumsy at times despite the more refined, mature way he speaks. He doesn’t think his approach through, nor does he approach things gradually so much as getting in one’s face and asking. He simply lets his inspiration carry him, and will follow a person unprompted to ask with very little lead up if they would help him.
Understanding and processing complex emotions and feelings can sometimes be difficult for him, and seems to hold him back at times, both socially and with his art. Either when he doesn’t understand a social cue, or misreads an emotional situation without gathering the context and letting his mind jump to the obvious instead of the undertones... There are even times seems unaware of what is socially acceptable to say or suggest, and he tends to be quite earnest about people around his intentions and ideas, especially about art. This sometimes makes him seem pushy, but he often just needs to be firmly told by someone else when he’s overstepping.
Once he feels a connection with someone, he tends towards being both quite loyal and quite insistent around them. This can make him a good ally, someone quick to bond over their unfortunate circumstances in life. Wanting to listen and talk, to reach out and count on and be counted on... But it also can cause a lot of difficulties when he becomes caught up in his loyalties to someone he perhaps shouldn’t. He holds on to his belief that his ‘sensei’ is a good man that he owes his life to for a very long time, almost insistently, as he tries to keep convincing himself of this before he finally realizes and admits the truth. A fellow student is the only person before the thieves that he confided in to being unhappy and feeling as though he were trapped and couldn’t leave, simply because he felt like he owed Madarame for taking him in and raising him.
Even after the fact, despite knowing he can never go back to how things were... He has a hard time only seeing the bad in Madarame. He wishes that the man would go back to how he used to see him, even if that version of Madarame was probably never real.
His idea of boundaries is very loose, and if he gets an idea in his head, he doesn’t tend to consider that not everyone will agree with him. This goes as far as assuming that, because they’re friends, Ann and her family won’t mind him staying with them once he leaves Madarame’s and finds the dorms too noisy and dirty to work on his art. It’s not that he’s entirely without manners, going as far as spending all of his money on an expensive box of sweets to thank them... But he doesn’t consider that asking first would be proper.
Many find his approach and the way his mind associates one thing with another very weird, and the phantoms agree that he’s ‘on another level from other people’ and disconnected at times. He is well aware of how his mind tends towards working differently than his colleagues. Yusuke prefers to describe himself as eccentric over weird, though he prefers that people not point it out at all, being rather sensitive about the fact if it feels like an insult.
Sometimes even seeing a creature or item of a specific colour or shade will inspire him, either with art or with a sudden craving for very specific foods. Seeing Morgana seems to prompt him to crave some black bean jelly.
Still, Yusuke surprisingly tends towards coming off as a more mature and levelheaded member of the team for someone of his age. He’s calmer than the others at times (barring situations where an emotional, dramatic reaction is triggered), and willing to point out details or possibilities while they’re in team meetings. Yusuke can be quite kind and empathetic to another’s plights once he realizes they have been through something or found themselves without a place they truly fit in. He’s very welcoming in the respect that he tries to explain and help someone adjust to joining the group. He also tends to recognize that some members of the group may need time to cope and recover from the things they’ve been through, even with those who he’s prone to bicker with or annoy/be annoyed by.
Not to mention he’s quick to step up and explain things to newer members of the team, helping Makoto with understanding how the phantom thieves and even the metaverse works. He adapts rather quickly to new situations once he’s accepted them, rather than get too hung on things like talking cats or alternate realities.
That said... He also tends to be quite severe and judging of those who act thoughtlessly or in an uncouth manner. Sometimes he doesn’t have a lot of patience for Ryuji between the way he speaks and the way he tends to not think of the consequences of his louder tones or actions at times. Of the phantom thieves, though still wanting recognition, he tends to prefer the more smooth, quiet and well thought out approach.
Unfortunately, his displayed maturity only goes as far as situations and working among the phantom thieves... When it comes to handling money, he tends to be quite frivolous and doesn’t tend to think before he spends his money on things. The only thing he tends to think about when making a purchase is the possible inspiration he might draw from it and then think of food and necessities after the fact. Usually by that point, unfortunately, he has nothing to pay for a meal.
On top of his poor money managing skills, the teen tends to have issues with managing his own health. Once he realizes he’s hungry and is faced with a good meal, he’ll get lost in the food and cravings rather quickly. Some may think he has a large appetite, but unfortunately Yusuke has a tendency to forget to eat meals for long periods of time. At one point, he realizes he hasn’t eaten since the day before. His waiflike build is likely due to this, having been neglected and neglecting himself over the years in his dedication to his art. His teammates even go as far as to try to step up and help him when it comes to these things, at least when he’s with them. Either offering him some money to pay for a meal when they go out, or when their Leader makes curry and invites him to have some. He's always grateful for their kindness, of course, but he never quite seems to learn to take care of himself once he's lost in another project.
Inventory:
- Clothes: Purple, black and gray lightweight tunic length top. Black pants and shoes.
- Key ring full of keys
- Cellphone
- A large black leather satchel containing: A sketchpad, and a small assortment of art supplies (pencils, erasers, charcoal, brushes, watercolour set, a couple of tubes of oil paint probably meant to replenish his collection at the dorms), a couple blank cards, assorted odds and ends that he keeps on him (like a wallet, mascara, a volume of some manga from the library).
Which of the following would they most like to have in abundance: limitless good luck, the freedom to act without restraint, the ability to teach and to learn, or for everyone to just relax? The ability to teach and to learn
